We want to extend warm wishes to all our friends and readers who celebrate Christmas. May this holiday season be filled with peace, love, and laughter!
We are grateful for our readers' love and support of One Perfect Plan. Click to read Kate Taliferro’s book review, sharing how she used One Perfect Plan as a homeschooling resource.
The illustration creation process of the Nativity:
The final illustration elements of One Perfect Plan were painted using watercolors on paper and then composited in Photoshop. In the past, I used to paint all illustrations of my picture books 100% using traditional watercolor without digital adjustment. However, as I began working on more book projects, I changed my process to streamline productivity and improve collaboration with the publishing team.
When publishing children's books, the graphic designer in-house is responsible for text layout. However, during the final layout design, it is often necessary to move some illustration elements to ensure better framing or layout of the text. Traditional hand-painted watercolor paintings are difficult to adjust once they are complete, making it challenging for graphic designers to make layout adjustments. To solve this issue, I have adapted the traditional 2D animation process in my book illustration pipeline, separating each layer during the hand-painting process. I then composite the final page digitally, making it easier to make the necessary adjustments. Here is an example of how the compositing process works.
