I love sketching people at cafes and airports. When I was in animation school, we had to learn how to quickly capture motion and emotion, and eventually learn to create dynamic action and performance poses from imagination. One of the best ways to master this skill is to practice tons of gesture drawings from live observation.
I used to organize a sketch club with friends, and we would go around town sketching and painting. But, as life and work got busy, and people moved away, slowly I didn't do as much live sketching as before.
Even though I get to draw and illustrate for a living every day, I miss going out and drawing just for fun without the pressure of creating perfect art for work. Just have fun drawing and sketching without worrying about pressure or expectations. Create art for its sheer joy, to be silly, and to have fun!
Just getting back to sketching for fun feels awesome. I made a live drawing video with some commentary. I hope you all enjoy it!
This below is the pen I mentioned in the video. It's my go-to brush pen for quick sketches and gesture drawing. When I'm working on digital sketches, I like finding brushes that mimic the Pentel Brush pen's texture and brush stroke.
This pen is not water-soluble. It's perfect for blending with watercolor and gouache. It's awesome for creating manga or traditional Eastern painting styles, like Chinese ink brush or Japanese sumi painting.
Below are sketches at Scranton airports, hanging out with my camp friends while waiting for our flight home. I didn't add paper texture to these.
